Merry Christmas Sew-Along ~ Ornament #3

Craftsy

It’s time for the Merry Christmas Sew-Along ~ Ornament #3!  As I mentioned before, I’ve partnered with my friend Monique of Farm House Quilts to bring y’all 10 ornament patterns we designed over the next 5 months – all for FREE!  We know what the “theme” is each month, but we haven’t seen each others designs.  That means we get to be surprised too when it’s not our turn to post!  Okay, lets get to the merry ornament making!

Merry

Ornament #3 ~> Partridge & Pear

Our theme for this month’s ornament is “bird”.  The first thing I thought of was the “Twelve Days of Christmas” & the “partridge in a pear tree”.  I can never remember all the items for the 12 days, but the partridge is the first one & repeated every verse, so it stands out!  Well, this one and “five golden rings!”  : )  This is my version, which is just the partridge & the pear.

This time I made the regular cut out ornament, but decided to show how the patterns can be used to make a quilt block as well.  Here are my versions of Monique’s ornament pattern from last month.

Partridge & Pear

As with the first ornament, I’ve given you a pdf for a placement guide, the pattern pieces, & the pattern pieces in reverse.  I did this so you could use the method you prefer to cut out the pieces without having to worry about reversing things.

Special Notes:

  • The dotted lines are there to help with placing the pieces that go over other pieces.
  • Every piece, or group of pieces, has a letter.  Pieces are placed in alphabetical order.
  • There are no pattern pieces for the eye, pear end, & branch end since I added those details with embroidery thread.

Cut-Out Ornament Instructions

I used the same technique I used for the first ornament, so I won’t repeat the steps here.  You can see the instructions in the first post.  Since most of these pieces are larger than the last ornament, I’m giving a list of fabric cuts.  This should help you pick out the right size scraps!

  • Pear ~ 4.5″ x 5.5″
  • Bird Body ~ 2.5″ x 5.5″
  • Bird Wing ~ 2.5″ x 3.5″
  • Branch ~ 3″ x 5″
  • Beak & Pear Stem ~ small scraps
  • Backing fabric ~ 5.5″ x 7.5″
  • Batting ~ 5.5″ x 7.5″

I used a free motion foot to stitch down the pieces & add some detail to the wings & neck.  The embroidery was done with a dark grey thread – satin stitch for the eye & branch ends and back-stitch for the feet.

Quilt Block Instructions

I thought it would be fun to show how this pattern could be used for a quilt block!  Here are the fabric sizes I used:

  • Center fabric ~ 5.5″ x 7.5″
  • Border ~ {2} 2.5″ x 5.5″ & {2} 2.5″ x 12.5″
  • Fabric listed above for the applique pattern.

I ironed down the pear first & stitched around it using a blanket stitch.  Then I ironed on the remaining pieces.  I used the blanket stitch again around the bird & wing.  A straight stitch was used on the branch, beak, & pear stem to stitch it down & fill in the ends.  This time I used black embroidery thread to add the eye & legs.

Once I finished the center details, I sewed on the shorter border pieces to the top & bottom.  Press seams towards the borders, then sew on the side pieces.  Press these seams towards the borders & your block is done!  This makes a 9.5″ x 11.5″ quilt block.

With 5 patterns from me & 5 from Monique, I think a nice little wall hanging could be fashioned together!  Just another idea for using the patterns.  : )

I hope y’all enjoy my partridge & pear ornament & be sure to post a picture of your ornament in the Facebook group!  You’ll be able to find all the links to the ornament posts & other social things on the page for the SAL.
