As the title suggests, today’s post is all about a swing dress.  It’s a popular style that has transcended the ages.  There are so many variations of the swing dress, but today’s post will center around Cents of Style’s version.  They were kind enough to send me their Remi Swing Dress and accessory of my choosing.  I chose their Berlin Blanket Scarf because I wanted one as soon as I saw it!  In exchange I’m going to share how I styled it and what I think about it.  First, a little history on the swing dress!

Swing Dress Origins

The swing dress came about because of a popular dance that came out in the 1920s called the Lindy Hop.  It involved lots of leg kicks and twirling about, so a fuller skirt that hit at the knee was great for movement and showing some leg.  The original was very full in the skirt portion, fitted on the upper torso, and nipped in at the waist.  Sometimes a petticoat or crinoline was added for extra volume.  Today’s swing dress is somewhere between an a-line and trapeze dress.  Let’s take a look at some different ways to wear the Remi Swing Dress from Cents of Style.

Casual Style

Let me just say, I love this dress!  It’s very comfortable – yoga pants comfortable!  The top is more fitted through the sleeves and bust, but it starts to flare just below the bust.  This is a great feature since it helps cover any tummy issues and fits over my larger bottom half!  It hits me about 1″-2″ below the knee and I’m 5′-8″.  The dress I’m wearing is an XL, which I usually need because I have broader shoulders and thicker arms – just not a large bust.  The dress comes in sizes S to 3XL and in over 15 colors, so there is something for everyone!  This picture gives a good view of it plain and shows just how big their blanket scarf is!

Here’s the dress with the scarf wrapped.  Yeah, I know, grey boots, grey dress – not so inventive!  {This scarf is on sale for $17.95 right now, no code needed!}

For the next look, I added a belt for more waist definition and a jean jacket for an extra layer.  The knee high boots have been in my closet forever and they work perfectly with this dress!  I think Cents of Style’s floral blazer would work for this look as well.

Dressy Style

Now let’s dress it up a little!  I swapped the knee boots for heels and added some sparkle with a necklace.  This would be a great date-night look!

Different necklace and red jacket.  This is a London Fog jacket that I’ve had for years and I’ve only had to resew a button on!  If I look tired, it’s because I was!  We went to the fair the same day I did this “fashion shoot”, so it was a long day.

Bohemian Style

This style is closer to my everyday style.  Bohemian style is so free and flowy, and this dress is a perfect fit for it!  In this picture I’ve paired it with a long, flowy sweater vest, knee boots, and some funky jewelry.

This final look is a little funky, and I’m not completely sure I like it, but I’ll share it anyway!  I added a handmade (by me) crocheted shrug and a longer necklace.  Black tights and a different pair of boots finish the look.

As you can see, this dress is very versatile!  It can go from casual to dressy just by changing accessories. If you have any doubts about it working for your body type, check out the video below, it just might change your mind!
