It’s time for another Monthly Crafty Destash Challenge!  For this month, I grabbed an old wire lamp frame frame & some selvage edges out of my stash.  Now I have an awesome lamp shade that just needs a lamp base to rest on!

Every month, a group of bloggers are challenged by C’mon Get Crafty to create a new craft or project from their own stash of goodies!  Rules are to use mostly things from your stash & up to $10 in extra supplies if needed.  Check out some awesome creations you might be able to make from your own stash! #CraftRoomDestashChallenge

Old Lamp Frame

This lamp shade frame has been hanging out waiting for inspiration to to strike.  I just needed to scrape off some of the leftover material on the top & bottom.  My razor blade scraper made this an easy job!

I decided to use my selvage edges saved over the years to make a woven cover for the wire frame.  They’re buried somewhere in my strip scrap tube…

I picked this jewel glue for fabrics from my glue collection to help hold things together.  This glue must be older than I thought because I can’t find this exact thing online!  Here’s a link to some Aleene’s glue that should work just as well.

I gave the lamp frame a once over with some Rustoleum Ultra Cover in purple.  This was leftover from my wire basket makeovers.

Once my lamp frame was all ready it was time to fish out the selvage edges & get to gluing!

Selvage Edges

Y’all this tube is stuffed with fabric strips!  After I emptied out what I thought was most of it, a little fluffing & it was half full again!

I had way more selvage edges than I thought I did.  I divided them into two piles.  The shorter ones would be for the vertical weave & the longest were for the horizontal weave.

I also had to iron them because they were very wrinkly after being smooshed into that tube.  ; )

I started at one corner, wrapping the ends over the top & bottom, & attaching each piece with the glue.  This glue grabs & dries quickly so, there’s no need to clamp things down.

I put on Netflix & before long I had all the vertical strips down!

It looks different on every side…

It’s fun to see the selvage edges & remember what I did with the fabric.

It’s time to add the cross weave!

Cross Weave

For the cross weave, I glued the end of a long strip to the back of a vertical strip.  Then I went over & under each vertical strip all around the base.

When I made it back to the beginning, I trimmed the end & glued it to itself.  I started the next row on a different vertical strip & alternated the weave.

I pushed the strips down to snug things up a bit as I went up the lamp frame.

After I was finished weaving the strips, I trimmed up all the loose threads.  The top pieces of the lamp frame were gold & I left some of that to show through the purple paint.

Now my lamp shade is all finished & it turned out better than I imagined.  Love it when that happens!  : D

Finished

Here’s my finished lamp shade ~>

It’s like a decorative scrapbook of fabrics I’ve used throughout the years!  I just need to find the perfect lamp base for it…

Okay, maybe my Ottlite is just a temporary resting spot, but I wanted to see what it might look like!  ; )

I think I have an idea of what I can use for a base, but I think I’ll save that for later!  This is one more month for me using only items from my stash!  Yay!  : D  Be sure to check out everyone’s crafty detash projects at the bottom of this post.

Pin it for later!

  1. How creative!!! I love the idea of working memorable fabric into a project. I put away so many clothes I can’t part with but won’t fit anymore or be miserably out of style and I keep thinking every now and then about what to do with the lot. A colourful memory lampshade is an idea I’ll be putting on a list. Pinning it!

    • I hang on to clothes like that too! I’m working on making them into new things so I can still enjoy them. Thank you for sharing! 🙂

    • I do love having it in my craft room, just need to get a real lamp base for it! Selvage edges are fun to use for lots of projects. 🙂
