Golden Spindle Carrots

Welcome to the May Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by My Pinterventures. The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop {and y’all too} to not just pin, but to make it happen! This month’s challenge is about Father’s Day, which is coming up next month. I chose something simple again – simple but delicious! This candied bacon is a favorite for pretty much anyone that eats it. : )

Usually, I go to a Pinterest board related to the theme & scroll all the way to the bottom. I like to find a Pin that’s been simmering for awhile! This month, I kept coming back to a recent pin from Penny’s Vintage Home. She combined old crib spindles with greenery to make carrots – so neat!

I had a pile of wooden spindles leftover in my stash that were perfect for this. My remake took a slightly different turn, but I really like how it turned out!

Golden Spindle Carrots

As I mentioned before I had the perfect pile of wooden spindles for this project…

I picked up the metal basket for a buck while thrifting & it has the perfect “egg” shape for this project. I’ve used spindles from this pile to make Christmas ornaments here & here. These are all that’s left…

After checking the layout in the basket, I decided to go ahead & use them all. Can you see the golden spindle carrots yet?

In the original post, she cut down the crib spindles & left the chippy paint intact. My spindles are smaller & bare wood, so I wanted to give them a little extra. Plus I didn’t have any greenery on hand for the tops. That’s when having an abundant yarn stash comes in handy!

I’m using DecoArt Extreme Sheen in copper, bronze, & 24k gold. I used these & some other colors for my ornaments & I love the shine! It only takes one coat on bare wood to get this…

After the paint {mostly} dried, I put eye hooks in the ends of the spindles so I could tie on the yarn. The larger spindles already had holes in them.

How convenient!

The little ones were not as easy to put in! No pre-drilled holes & the smaller eye hooks like to break off if you twist too hard. I managed to get them in, but not all of them are screwed all the way down.

Adding the Tops

I’ve had this fuzzy green yarn in my stash for quite awhile. It’s No Boundaries yarn that used to be produced by Wal-Mart. The yarn was too slippery to stay tied on it’s own, so I added in some Re-Up cotton yarn.

I layered several pieces of yarn together & used a needle thready to put it through the eye hooks.

You have to twist the yarns together & fold them over to get them through the needle threader.

They look carrot-ish, right?

I really think these carrots could have come from Wonderland…

I really love the different texture the yarn gives!

I think a few colorful eggs sprinkled in the basket would make the perfect touch!

I really had fun doing this project because I haven’t painted in quite awhile! This is definitely a very different centerpiece, but I really love it!
