Ready for some more whimsical Halloween decor?  This spooky spider frame is the perfect addition to my Halloween vignette.  Spiders like to be sneaky and can really “spook” you when you see one.  If I saw one as big as these I’d probably pass out from fright!  You can make this in less than an hour!  It probably won’t even take that long, depending on how fast the paint dries.  Make sure your scroll all the way to the end of this post because there is a little surprise at the bottom!  Let’s get “spooky”!

Spooky Ingredients

  • creepy cloth – This is great for all kinds of Halloween decor.  It’s like a really loose weave cheesecloth.01-original-frame
  • acrylic paint and brushes – The colors I used are shown in the photos below.  Anita’s brand paint is found at Hobby Lobby.
  • paper spiders – Here’s a tip:  seasonal/holiday decor is 70% – 90% at the end of the season/holiday.  Stock up then and store for next year!
  • old frame – I picked mine up at the 100 mile yardsale for $1!  It’s about 20″ x 26″ overall.
  • stapler – a regular paper stapler worked for my frame.  Just make sure it’s one that will open up flat.

Painting the Frame

I used my stippling brush for this, so I could get into all the nooks and crannies.  One corner of this frame was chipped, which made it perfect for this project!

  1. Grab your frame and lay it on a surface that you can paint on.  Old newspaper works great!
  2. The paints I used – violet, basil, and lemon-grass.
  3. Add the basil paint.  Make sure to get a good coat on the top and sides.
  4. Add the violet once the first layer is dry.  I used less paint on my brush for this step and concentrated it on the raised decoration.
  5. Once the second coat is dry, add the lemon grass paint.  Dip the brush in the paint and wipe off most of it.  This is a dry brush technique.  Just drag the brush over the raised decoration to highlight it.  I went over it twice to really make it pop.

Attaching the Web

Y’all this is so easy I don’t need steps!  Just staple the creepy cloth to the back of the frame and trim off the excess.  I used a regular stapler, which was ok for the most part.  I felt a staple gun would be too much for this frame and crack it.  This is not a fabric you can pull taunt because it’s so stretchy, so it will hang a little.

Attaching the Spiders

The kit I have comes with little double sided sticky foam dots.  I did attach some green thread with tape to the frame and spider bottoms.  It’s hard to see and I think it would look great with or without it, which is why I didn’t list it in the “ingredients”!  Just use the foam dots to attach the spiders and your done!
