Today I’m taking a little detour from my usual sewing & fiber posts to join in a Christmas Tree Decor Blog Hop! I’m super excited to share my Christmas tree with y’all because I did something a little different this year. Making a tomato cage Christmas tree for my table was the best solution for my limited space this year. Hope y’all enjoy!

Tomato Cage Christmas Tree Beginnings

Last Christmas I lived with the middle section of my tree having no working lights. I tried to fix it – replacing bulbs & fuses – to no avail. I was going to look for a new tree after Christmas because that’s when you get the best price, but that didn’t happen! Since I didn’t want to drag out a half working tree, I decided to use my lighted garland to make one out of a tomato cage. The first wrapping came up a little short…

Then I remembered an old galvanized tub I had hiding out in the garden which was perfect for hiding an uncovered bottom. After re-wrapping the garland from the top, it was looking much better – even Santa approves! By the way, I doubled up the tomato cages so it would be more supportive & wobble less. ; )

This is setting on the end of my dining room table. Since it’s a longer table, there will still be room for eating, even though we rarely eat at the table! ; )

Once I had the tree set up it was time to decide what ornaments to use. Some were definitely too big!

The tree I usually put up is about 7′-6″ tall & this one is about half the size. I had loads of these ornament clusters made that I normally put in the center of the tree, to reflect the light more.

I used a few in the center of the new tree, but they had to be a pair instead of a trio to work.

Here’s my finished tree! It turned out better than I expected & I was able to incorporate my large ornaments into the “scene”. : D

I draped a piece of flannel fabric over the galvanized tub for some extra color & warmth. Mr. Moose is right at home next to one of my favorite glass ornaments.

I did hang a few larger ornaments on the tree, like my word ornaments that say “peace”, “hope”, & “joy”. You can see how the ornaments on the inside reflect the light.

They really help things shine!

I had to include my tiny sweater ornaments and you can also see some of the bits & pieces ornaments I made recently. My ornaments from the sew-along were too big for this tree, but I hung them on the mantel with the stockings. I’ll share that picture when I reveal the last ornament next Monday. ; )
