It’s time to put together all the blocks from the CAL and have a cozy murder mystery blanket for reading under! I’ve really enjoyed doing this, this year even if I struggled to keep up with my own CAL. I’ve decided to do it again for 2022, but this time it’s a row by row. Come back next Friday for more information and the beginning pattern!

Yarn & Block Info

I’ve been using Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran {acrylic} in various colors for my squares. This is listed as a #4 yarn, but not listed in their worsted weight category. It feels a little thinner than the standard Red Heart yarn, but thicker than Caron Simply Soft. I’ve run out of the yarn and need to get more {such a tragedy, lol}. I decided to try out this King Cole tweeded yarn I have in several colors, then I’ll have squares started for a fall blanket too. These are all the squares except September’s, which I still need to make.

Each block will be 10″ x 10″ {26 cm x 26 cm} and I will be making two of them each month. This will give me 24 squares total, so I can lay them to make a 40″ x 60″ afghan. If you make one block each month, you can make a 30″ x 40″ afghan.

You can use whatever yarn fiber and/or weight you would like to use. The pattern can be adjusted for different yarn weights. For example, add more rounds for lighter yarns if needed or leave off rounds for heavier yarns if needed to make the 10″ square. You could also just make smaller or bigger squares if you like. : )

Joining Pattern

You can join your blocks however you please, but I thought it would be fun to give y’all a little crochet joining pattern.

Supplies:

  • Yarn – King Cole Fashion Aran {acrylic}, #4 worsted weight {use the weight, fiber, & color you prefer}
  • Hook – 5.5mm {I9}

Abbreviations:

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • dc – double crochet

This join just involves a double crochet and slip stitch between two squares. To start off, join yarn at a ch 2 corner, ch 2, then sl st into the corner of the opposite square.

Next, dc into the first dc of the square you just joined, then sl st into the first dc of the opposite square.

Then dc in the 2nd dc of the square you just sl stitched to and sl st to the 2nd dc in the opposite square.

Go back and forth like that until your squares are fully joined. Don’t forget to dc & sl st into the ch 2 corner at the end.

Once you join all your squares for a row, then you’ll join the rows.
At the intersection dc & sl st into the corners of the squares & dc & sl st twice in the middle intersection.
Continue on down the row until it’s all joined.
Don’t forget to weave in the ends! I always wait until the end to do this, lol!
Once you’ve joined all your squares, add your favorite border or leave it borderless. Please share your finished blanket in the Facebook group. I still have two special bags up for grabs and I’ll be picking two winners from the finishes.

I hope y’all enjoyed this CAL as much as I enjoyed making the patterns. Hope everyone will join in for 2022! Let me know if you find any errors & I will correct them. This pattern has not been tested by anyone but me. : D
