Double Sided Crocheted Hot Pad

This weekend I was thinking about things I needed to make for my kitchen. The first thing that came to mind was hot pads! I have a set of cast iron enamel pots & several cast iron pans that can get too hot to handle real quick. Usually I just wrap up a dish towel to pick them up with, but I wanted something less loosey goosey! I decided to grab some cotton yarn from my stash & whip up a crocheted hot pad. These are double sided to help keep out the heat!

Yarn & Hook

Cotton yarn is the best yarn to use for projects used around heat. You shouldn’t use anything synthetic, like acrylic for these. Acrylic will melt if it gets too hot! So will that scrubby yarn I’m showing in the picture below…

I’m using a combination of I Love This Cotton! {multi} & Peaches ‘n’ Cream {lime}. Both are 100% cotton. I’ll be holding a strand of each together to make these hot pads. I wanted these to be extra thick & squishy to help keep my hands burn free! You’ll also notice that I ran out of lime green at the top & had to switch to white. These are great scrap & stash busters! : )

For the hook, I’m using a K/10.5 – 6.5 mm.

Square Hot Pad

I started this off with 15 foundation single crochet, which came out to about 7″. This is a very useful stitch & saves time once you learn it! Next:

• CH 1, turn, SC in 1st SC, DC in bottom loop of FSC & in the next 12 loops, SC in last SC

This part is a little different to start, but hopefully the picture helps! This is turned the opposite way that you will be crocheting, so you can see the loops. You will be working in TWO rows of stitches after this.

Next row:

• CH 1, turn, SC in SC on FRONT ROW, 13 DC in SC on BACK ROW, SC in last SC on FRONT ROW

Next row:

• CH 1, turn, SC in SC on FRONT ROW, 13 DC in DC on BACK ROW, SC in SC on FRONT ROW

Now, you just repeat that last row 20 more times or until you reach about 7″. Here’s look at the hot pad as I’m crocheting it…

You’re going back & forth like straight crochet, just working the stitches in the back row or side of the hot pad. Once you get to the top you’ll have one side that’s a little higher that the other.

To close up the top:

• CH 1 & turn after last row, SC in SC, *SC in DC on the FRONT ROW & BLO of DC on the BACK ROW*
• Repeat * * 13 times, SC in last SC

Now add the loop:

• CH 10, SL ST to side of beginning SC & into beginning CH

Weave in your ends & you have a new hot pad! : )

This was a fast and easy project that helped me use up some stash/scrap yarn & fill a need in my kitchen!

Hot Pad for Handles

I decided to make a small one just for hot handles too!

For this one I used the same method & just started with 10 FSC. You only need about 9 to 10 rows, but it really depends on the handle you’re making it for. Close up the top the same as before, then fold it in half to make a pocket.

Slip stitch up the side…

And across the end, adding the loop at the corner…

I’m really loving my new hot pad set!

This is my mini cast iron pan, but the handle cover fits on all of them. I plan on making a larger hot pad for my big pots. This smaller one will also be great when lifting lids to check on cooking food.
