Grandmother’s Favorite Block

I picked out some fun, springy prints to make my block! The black & white was a great contrast to the lighter prints & gave it the vintage vibe I was looking for.

The Fat Quarter Shop sent me a couple pieces of Half Square Triangle Paper to try out.

They are printed with guidelines for making 8 half square triangles from 2 pieces of fabric laying right sides together. You can buy them in a long roll & in different sizes.

Once all the seams are stitched it’s time to cut…

After using one, I can see the appeal! It makes HST’s go really fast, but it does leave a pile of paper behind. I had no trouble removing the paper. It’s kind of in between tissue paper & printer paper.

My HST’s are looking good!

This product is great if you struggle with accuracy in your blocks. It makes it really easy to see if your seams are correct & know where to cut. I could see myself using these if I had a ton of HST’s to make, like in my Postcard from Sweden quilt top.

Flying Geese

To make the flying geese, I used the standard marking method. I like to mark them all then chain piece.

These look like hearts when ironed open!

My flying geese are almost done! I had to stop mid cutting to snap this photo. It reminded me so much of a flock of geese, haha!

Time to stitch the side formation. I love that some of the triangles look like I did some fussy cutting, cause I didn’t! Since I used two fat quarters, there really wasn’t enough fabric for that.

I realized when I was ready to sew the sides to the center, something was very wrong with the size of my center piece…

There was an error in the pattern which called for the center block to be 1.5″ x 1.5″ when it really needed to be more like 8.5″ x 8.5″. After some stash digging, I came up with a great alternative for my black & white print!

The layout above is what the pattern calls for and what I sewed up. I thought it would be fun to see how different the block looked by simply rearranging the layout…

So many possibilities! I took my finished block outside to get a shot in the sun…

It took a bit to get a good picture because it was a very windy day…

I really enjoyed making this block! My only regret is that I made it with 3 fat quarters & I don’t have enough to make a whole quilt! I’ll be quilting this block & adding hangers for a fun mini quilt to hang on the wall. That way I’ll still get to enjoy my block!

Hope y’all enjoyed seeing how the block goes together. Don’t forget to head over to the Fat Quarter Shop blog to check out the quilt along!
