This year I’m teaming up with Crochet Creations by Christi to host a Happy Scrappy Yarn Challenge. Each month we will issue a challenge to help you use up those yarn scraps & single skeins you have tucked in nooks & crannies around your house. There will be prizes each month as well, so keep reading to find out all the yarny details!

Happy Scrappy Yarn Challenge Rules & Such

Christi & I will be alternating months. I’ll be sharing the challenge in January & she’ll be sharing the challenge in February. It will go back & forth like that all year long. Whoever is responsible for the challenge that month will also be responsible for the prize. We will share challenges & prizes on our YouTube channels & in the Facebook group. I’ll also be doing a monthly blog post about all the challenges.

For this challenge, we have set up a joint Facebook group so there’s a place to share all your fabulous makes. The first thing you need to do to participate is join the group. You can also follow along on Christi’s YouTube channel & my YouTube channel. Here are some other things to know:

  • Challenges will be issued on the first Thursday each month, with the exception of January. This is the 2nd Thursday, but I had a lot going on at the beginning of the year y’all! : )
  • You will have until the end of the month to enter your project in the Facebook group. It must be related to the challenge for the month to be eligible for the prize that month. Please only share makes related to the challenge. That’s what the group is for after all!
  • If you love yarn, you can participate in the challenge! This challenge is for all yarn lovers – crocheters, knitters, loomers, weavers, etc. The only limitation is that your project should be made mostly with scraps and/or single skeins of yarn.

I think that should cover all the rules & such. If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments here or on YouTube or in the Facebook group.

January’s Challenge ~ Spa Day

When the first month of the year rolls around I always think about renewal. Renewal of the mind, body, & spirit. What better way to kick off the new year than with a spa day! Making things for a spa day can be a great way to use up cotton scraps & single skeins. It can also be a great way to make up some gifts for the year if you want a head start.

Project Ideas

I’ve rounded up some ideas for y’all & all of them would be great for scraps. Really, any pattern can be done with scraps. It gives your favorite pattern a totally new look! I’ve tried to round up as many different yarny crafts as possible to help y’all have plenty of ideas.

I’m designing a soap sack & body washcloth to go along with the face cloth pattern above. Look for a post with the free patterns on Monday!

I made the soap bag, face cloth, & about half of the washcloth with one skein of KnitPicks Comfy Sport in Flamingo. I’m using a leftover skein to finish up the washcloth in a mauve color. KnitPicks no longer sales Comfy Sport & the closest I could find to it is Shine Sport.

Suggested Yarns & Such

Most of the items in that fit with this challenge work best with cotton or mostly cotton blends. Especially if it’s something that will be used in the shower or tub.

There are some things that would work with other yarns. The flip flop pattern above is a good example. Plus, many of the kits listed above have basket patterns included. This is a great way to incorporate other yarn fibers into your project!

If you want things to coordinate, try mixing scraps with a single colored skein. This will help connect the pieces & make them feel more like a set. You are not required to make a set or even multiples to qualify for the monthly prize. Do as much as you can for the month, share a photo in the Facebook group, & take a peak at all the other happy scrappy yarn projects!

Happy making y’all! 😀
