I’m very excited about this pattern! It’s the first crochet pattern I’ve written that was tested by others, not just made by me. It’s a great thing to see a pattern you’ve written made by others! Today I’m going to share a little of the process I went through & some pictures from my fabulous testers. Hope y’all enjoy the Bumps & Scales Shawl!

I’m also sharing the written version of the small shawl here on the blog. The entire Bumps & Scales Shawl pattern with more pictures, small & large version, charts, & tips for using different sized yarns will be for sale in my Etsy shop. It will be 50% off through the month of October as part of my fall birthday sale.

Making a Pattern

I’ve always loved C2C or corner to corner crochet! I’ve been playing around with doing different stitches using the C2C method for a while now. Here are some other patterns that are free on the blog using the C2C method:

As you can see, sometimes one pattern leads to another! The Bumps & Scales Cowl pattern was released last year & is similar to the shawl. I made some changes to the stitches & added some open work into the C2C pattern.

The first thing I do when I have a pattern idea is do a sketch on graph paper. I was aiming for a shawl that would use one cake of yarn, like a Mandala. The first “prototype” didn’t work out exactly like I wanted…

It wasn’t horrible, but way too small to be a shawl. I used one Mandala cake in Fairy & I really wish I had started with the pink end. I went back to the pattern & rotated everything about 45 degrees. The next yarn I picked out of my stash was a pack of Wool Ease Cakes in Hades.

This yarn gave much more definition to the stitches because of the wool in it & I liked the direction of the stitches much better. One cake would still not be enough for a larger shawl.

The smaller size is good for a child’s shawl or a neck wrap & I decided to have two different sizes. Adding a second cake & decreasing the C2C, changes the direction of the stitches once again.

This made it more the size I had in mind! I’m really please with the way this turned out & I hope y’all will enjoy it too!

Tester’s Shawls

I wanted to see how the shawl worked up in different yarn weights. The yarn I used for my shawl is a #3 weight yarn. The testers used #1 {fingering}, #3 {DK}, & #4 {worsted} weight yarns & was pleased to see how versatile the pattern is! All of the testers did an awesome job & I’m so happy they let me share their photos with y’all. You can find detailed information on the different yarns used by each tester in the full pattern in my Etsy shop.

First up is Becky from Funny Farm Crochet on YouTube. She used a fingering weight yarn from Zombie Yarns for her shawl & she made the large size.

The next shawl was made by Hope & she made the large sized shawl using Yarn Bee Sugarwheel in Mango Puff, which is a #4 weight yarn.

The third shawl is by Jacoba & she used a Shawl in a Ball in the colorway Cleansing Quartz to make the small shawl. This yarn is listed as a #4 weight, but it’s much lighter than a typical worsted weight yarn.

These shawls are by Angela from Angela Crochets Art on YouTube. She also has an Etsy shop where she sells a little hand dyed yarn & finished crocheted items. The top shawl is a small size in Lion Brand Mandala in the Centaur colorway, which is a #3 weight yarn. On the bottom is a large size shawl in Lion Brand Mandala Ombre in the Happy colorway & that’s a #4 weight yarn.

This final shawl was made by Traeka using 3 different colorways of Red Heart Super Saver. That’s a #4 weight yarn & she made the small sized shawl. She also has an Etsy shop called The Cotton Stash where she sells handmade project bags.

Didn’t they do an awesome job?!? I really love how different each one looks in the yarns they chose to use. Information on using different yarn weights & notes from the testers for the pattern can be found in the full pattern in my Etsy shop.

Supplies Used

  • Lion Brand Wool-Ease Cakes in the color Hades {#3-DK, 5.3 oz/150 g, 590 yds/540 m} ~ I used 1 cake for the small shawl
  • 5 mm {H-8 US} crochet hook
  • Darning needle for weaving in ends

Notes

  • This shawl is worked in the standard C2C method using double crochet stitches.
  • There is a front side & back side to this shawl.
  • With front side of shawl facing you, the right side of the shawl increases in the standard way for C2C patterns. The left side increases & decreases to create a step pattern.
  • The increases & decreases on the left side will always maintain a straight line from point to point.
  • The “increasing” & “decreasing” sections are referring to the right side of the shawl only. The {increase} & {decrease} found at the ends of the rows is referring to the steps in the left side of the shawl.

2 Comments on Bumps & Scales Shawl Crochet Pattern

    • I made that sweater over 20 years ago as a teenager. I have no idea what pattern I used, but it was most likely from a crochet magazine I picked up in the store. I think the yarn was Red Heart Super Saver & I really don’t know what the color was. So sorry I can’t be more help!
