Although it may not seem like it, I’ve got a bad case of the crafting mulligrubs here lately! I don’t know exactly what it is, but I find myself having to force projects. It’s like I’d rather loaf around than do anything most of the time. I need to figure out what’s going on! If you’re looking for crafty inspiration here today, you may want to check out some past posts in the menu. Today, I’m just mulligrubbin’!

What Are the Mulligrubs?

Maybe you don’t even know what having the mulligrubs is, so here’s a definition link to check out. If you have children, you are probably very familiar with the mulligrubs. It looks something like this…

This is my son circa 2012 experiencing the mulligrubs on Christmas Day of all things! Basically it’s the feeling of wanting to do something, but feeling indecisive about what you want to do, so you do nothing. When kids experience this, they usually want an adult to solve it for them.

As an adult, I have to solve it for myself!

Inspiration-less

That title doesn’t mean I’m lacking inspiration. I find it all around me & in my internet perusing. I think maybe I need less inspiration. My brain is clogged up with so much inspiration it’s locked up like one of those revolving doors with too many people in it. Usually, my brain is constantly wondering, going from one idea to the next with reckless abandon, so I’m use to that. The door is always revolving – usually. Right now, it’s stuck to the point I’m having trouble pulling anything out!

Of course, according to this article from Wired, that’s probably not possible. I still think I need to give my brain a spring cleaning because that picture really shows how I feel! All those ideas are hard to lug around & my brain feels like a hot, humid southern summer. Bleh!

Simplify

In the beginning of the year I chose “simplify” as my word for the year. I don’t think my brain knows what that means sometimes! My goals for the year were to:

  • Finish unfinished projects
  • Stop following so many QAL’s, CAL’s, etc.
  • Work on my own designs
  • Learn to knit
  • Practice FMQ

Have I been working towards any of those goals? Not really!

  • I’ve been starting new projects & not finishing up the old ones first
  • QAL’s and such are still too tempting!
  • My designs are still lingering in my notebook
  • No progress made on the knitting : (
  • FMQ I have made some progress on – tiny bit!

So, what am I going to do to remedy this non-goal, non-progress making nonsense & bust up the mulligrubs?

I’m going to keep the above in mind & use the K.I.S.S. method – keep it simple stupid! That’s me talking to me, by the way, not y’all. ; )

It’s time to clear out the mind clutter, prioritize, & remember what my goals were when this year started. Let the spring cleaning of the mind begin!

Did y’all hear that? It’s the sound of mulligrubs fleeing!  : D

  1. Dear daughter I have tried your whole life to let you know that the best ideas are the ones that come from a simple thought and the simple is maintained throughout the whole project. Try not to over think yourself and soon all your creativity will again be running on all cylinders.

    Love you Dad

  2. I had never heard that term before, but I am definitely adopting it! I too suffer from the mulligrubs from time to time…terrible feeling. I hope yours go away soon 😉

    • I’ve heard the term my whole life & I had to look it up to be sure it wasn’t just a “family” word! I think writing that post helped move me in the right direction. 😃

  3. Milligrams . . . Not in my vocabulary either, but no can definitely identify with the feeling. Along on often, especially in the spring. We call it cabin fever. When I make my monthly goals, I make sure to add at least one big UFO, or several smaller ones. It has helped me to stay focused and productive. Also, finishing something, anything, usually helps jump start me to getting back on track.

    • That’s a great idea – adding UFO’s to monthly goals! I’ll have to keep that in mind. The mulligrubs is very much like cabin fever – minus the feeling of not being able to leave the “cabin”. 😉

  4. I know exactly what you mean. I felt that day today so I took a nap and read a book. My UFOs and WIP will still be there tomorrow.

  5. I had to laugh when I saw that term, my hubbie has an Uncle, Aunt and two cousins, that everyone calls the Mulligrubbs, but its because of their surname not because of any condition. I do however totally understand the feeling, your Dad said it all really and so did you, keep it simple and don’t stress. Great advise wish I would listen to it myself. Take care and thanks for the laugh.
