I jumped in on the #CurvyYearofSewing hosted by the Curvy Sewing Collective in January. The theme for January/February was jeans & trousers. I had all my fabrics & patterns picked out to make myself some fabulous pants. Things did not go as planned, as you will soon see, but I’m determined to keep forging ahead! This month is all about the jacket & blazer – one of my favorite things to sew surprisingly! Y’all can join in and share your makes by using #curvyyearofsewing on Instagram or in their Facebook group.  I’m really just following along so I can have some more me-made garments in my closet! : )

Pants from January/February Challenge

I had high hopes for making pants – there were 5 pair on my list to make! I managed to sew up two pairs of trousers & a pair of leggings, so not too bad. Unfortunately, I have some alterations to do before I can actually wear the two pairs of trousers. The leggings are awesome though! I will apologize in advance for no photos of me wearing any of these pants. My dogs refuse to take photos for me – the moochers!

First up were the Oceanside pants from Blank Slate Patterns & here they are all sewn up.

The first thing I realized I goofed on was putting the button holes for the drawstring on the inside of the waistline. This doesn’t make them unwearable, just a little annoying.

Then I realized when I put them on that the crotch is way too high for me! I adjusted the leg width, but for some reason I didn’t adjust the crotch rise, which is always a problem for me. Sigh. This is something I’m still pondering how to fix. I will also be adding the pockets.

Pattern #2…

I had this Simplicity’s New Look pattern #6544 on my list because I had already altered the pattern to fit while making these pants from 2016- or so I thought I had! Let’s look at the fun details first, before I tell you my issue, mmkay?

I added a pocket on one side, since there’s a zip in the other side. It’s a little bumpy, but okay. The fabric inside gives a good contrast to the pinstripes.

My zipper turned out fairly well too..

I went with a fun pop of pink & some floral cotton for the waist.

I was pretty pleased with these until I put them on…

They are way too big! Like fall off of me big! And no, I haven’t lost weight, if anything I’ve gained! Another, big, sigh. I don’t recall making that many changes to the first pair after I altered the pattern, but I must have. This is something I can fix, it will just require some time with the seam ripper first. Boo!

Pattern #3…

Originally I was going to use this mushroom fabric for the Barb’s Pants from Style Arc’s. Then I had a chance to test out a leggings pattern from Seamstress Erin & I decided that was a better fit. And it was – literally!

Y’all, I love these leggings!! I wear them all the time & will be making more. Just look at those mushrooms!

I have had some threads popping in certain areas, but I will reinforce those areas for this pair. These fit really well with no alterations. The next pair will get a few tweaks in the leg width & waist area to make them even better. I don’t know when she will put the pattern out for the public, but be sure to grab it when she does!

Pattern Picks for March/April

I’m excited about this next challenge because I love sewing jackets & blazers! There is something so wonderful to me about how they fit together & how you can really make it your own with details. The first pattern up on my list is Simplicity #3628 pattern from the Threads Magazine Collection.

I like all of these jackets, so I’m not sure which one it will be yet. The fabrics are between this plum purple corduroy…

And this rusty, with multicolored specks tweed-ish fabric.

My second choice is a tie between two Burda Style patterns. The first one is from the November 2015 issue, #102 B.

The second one is Burda Style #110 which is a PDF on my computer.

I love the detail of the second one & the draped collar of the first. The second gives more opportunities for mixing fabrics. This is one fabric I’m considering, a linen looking camo print.

It’s light weight & will be good for hotter weather. Still debating on this one! My last choice is the Zinnia Jacket from Blank Slate Patterns.

I need I new light weight sport jacket & this looks like a good choice. I’ll most likely pick one of my solid knits…

And pick some fun prints for the details!

One thing I know I will get done? Finishing this jacket already!

I just need to hand sew the hems & add buttons. It’s been hanging around for years like this! Well, the Tilda buttons are fairly new. A gift from an Australian pen pal! ; )

Okay y’all, this month is almost over, so I really need to get sewing! Have a marvelous Monday!

  1. Love you sewing picks. I made myself a new outfit for Easter, pants and a top. I’m also going to make some shorts for this summer. I really, really like the Tilda buttons. The mushroom fabric is too cute!

    • Thank you Joyce! You should share your makes in the Facebook group, it would be great to see them! 🙂
