Past Challenges

This post almost didn’t happen! I live in Southwest Georgia & the eye of hurricane Michael came right through my town. We still don’t have power at the time I’m typing this up {Saturday} & I had to go to my parents house to borrow there internet. My family & I are safe & we escaped with way less damage than many others. Please keep all those affected in your thoughts & prayers & if you can help in anyway, it will be much appreciated.

Now, let’s look at what I picked for this month’s challenge. I had to find something really easy to do that didn’t require much lighting. When I found this pin on my DIY ~ Gifts board, I knew it was the perfect thing. These pom pom earrings from Sewrella would be easy to make & I might even get a few gifts made as well. By the way, my pictures may look a little dark because I was relying on light from the window.

Working In the Dark

I have a whole bin full of leftover yarn, being that I crochet, so that part was easy. While I do have some jewelry making supplies, I didn’t have any of the earring hoops used in the original post. So I grabbed some things I thought would work & got ready to make pom poms.

I have a set of pom pom makers, which I have never used & didn’t know how to use. Luckily, Verizon is giving people in the area unlimited data through the 14th – thanks Verizon! That allowed me to find a YouTube video on how to use these contraptions. Turns out, it’s really simple!

I’m combining some Lion Brand Heartland & LB Collection silk mohair to make it a little fancy! : D

Time to snip it apart – poof!

And a pom pom is born!

So fluffy!

Making the Earring/Pendant

I’m going to break apart this chain to use the long oval loops in the pom pom.

It popped open easily with some pliers.

Basically I hooked the open loop through the tied portion of the pom pom. I decided to leave the 3 smaller loops on & then attach it to the ear wire.

It’s cute, but a little big for me. Although I was the queen of big earrings back in the 80s! I also realize my second pom pom was much smaller than the first one…

After fooling around with them for a minute, I decided to just make the larger one into a pendant. Since I didn’t have a chain long enough in my supplies, I added it to one of my favorite necklaces.

This is a great necklace to wear at this moment in time! It will remind me that I can {and have} make it through the challenges ahead of me. It goes great with my #thankful shirt!

This will help me remember that I have so much to be thankful for! Hope y’all have a great week!

  1. I love making pompoms and never thought to make one as a pendant but I can it as a fun addition to any outfit. And in a variety of fun colors too.

  2. Whew, glad you and your family are OK. How very scary that must have been. Being without power is so difficult. I commend you still creating your adorable pom poms for this post.

    • Thank you Debee! We are grateful to have minimal damage. Still waiting on the power to come back on, but we do have a generator. : )

    • Thank you Beverly! It’s been a long week & we are still waiting on the power to come back on, but at least we do have a generator. : )

  3. I like that much better as a necklace than as earrings too (as they would be way to large for me!). Glad to hear that your family made out OK. I hope you have your power back on soon. Pinned.

    • Me too! I’m thinking about making more for gifts. We are currently still without power, but I’m hoping it will be back by the end of the day. : )

    • Thank you Debra! It was very scary when we were hunkered down waiting on it to pass. I’m grateful to have made it through with little damage compared to most. The necklace is my favorite too! : )

  4. Wow, I’m so glad to hear you are safe.
Your pom pom earring are lovely, I LOVE a good pom pom project.
I had the exact same pom pom makers for my birthday this year and only got mine out of the packet a couple of weeks ago, I was excited to find out how easy they are to use!

    • Thank you Gail! Creating keeps me sane & this was definitely a time that I needed to create to help with stress. : )

  5. I’ve have those pom pom makers and never had a clue how to use them. For such an easy aid, they sure look complicated – LOL!

One thing I have not experienced is a hurricane and I’m quite okay with that. Hope your power has been restored by the time you read this!

    • I had to watch a YouTube video to figure out how to use them, they are strange little things! This is the first time I’ve been through a full blown hurricane. It was a scary experience I hope to never repeat! My power will hopefully be on by the end of day. : )

  6. Kristie, I am so happy that you are safe and Sound! Your shirt is wonderful and the pendant you’ve made, too. I am currently the queen of big earrings, lol, as I discovered super leightweight leather or crocheted ones. Those pom poms are great, but maybe to bulky for my taste.

  7. I saw a fashion post not too long ago where she was wearing pom pom earrings, and I thought, how fun is that?! I really love how you combined different yarn fibers, especially the pop of gold color in there. Love these!
