Welcome to the Scrappy Color Play QAL! This quilt-along is a fun way to use scraps and learn more about playing with colors. Every month, we’ll explore a different color of the rainbow while we use up those scrap piles. Check below for the details!

The Plan
This is my very first quilt-along! I’ve done sew-alongs and crochet-alongs, but never a quilt-along. Since I sew a lot, I have a lot of scraps – as do most sewists! I thought a scrappy quilt-along would be a good way to tackle those scrap piles. I also thought learning about color along the way would make it a little more interesting. This is my plan below:

These are the details:
- 24 blocks total, that’s 2 per month
- Each month is about a color or combining colors.
- Blocks are made up of strips varying from 1″ to 3″ wide sewn diagonally across the block.
- I’m using quilt-as-you-go for mine, but you can use the method that works best for you.
- The borders are 2.5″ strips. I’m doing all scrappy for those as well in blacks and grays.
- The small squares between the borders are 2.5″ x 2.5″ and I plan on fussy cutting prints for those.
- Here’s a free printable color sheet to help plan your color layout.
I hope y’all will join in the fun! You can share your blocks in my Teadoddles Makers Facebook group. Each month I pick a maker to win a $25 Amazon gift card. This group is for makers of all kinds and for all of my make-alongs.
Here are the past months blocks:
July – Yellow
The color for July is yellow! Perfect for the {very hot!} sunshine we have this month in my area. This color represents joy and happiness, but it can also represent cowardice. Be sure to check out my video this month to learn more about the history of yellow.

My yellow scraps are very small compared to other colors. I grabbed my stack of larger scraps as well to help complete these blocks this month.

As usual, I did a darker block and a lighter block. This is going to really work well in the layout I had in mind – which you can see further along in the post!

Here’s a close up of the dark combo block…

And a close up of the lighter combo block….

I did a full layout of all the blocks so far this month. We are over halfway complete! This first photo is in overlapping rows in color order.

I decided to lay them out in the quilt layout I have planned. You can see how it’s looking even though I had to overlap them to get them all on the table. Plus there will be borders, but I love how it’s looking!

Remember, this is the Scrappy Color Play QAL – that means you’re playing with your scraps! And that is supposed to be a fun experience. I’m certainly enjoying this and I hope you are too!
Pin it for later!
