For today’s DIY, I’m giving a wooden bin I found during a thrifting adventure a makeover! It’s pine wood knots & aged character really spoke to me. Plus, it was only $5! I knew I could transform it into something useful while still maintaining it’s character. I think I’ve succeeded, so let’s take a look & see what y’all think. : )

A Wooden Bin

When I spotted this wooden bin, planter, container, etc., I was immediately drawn to it’s sturdy pinewood sides. It was a little rough around the edges & had clearly been well loved at some point.

It’s got a crack on one side that I love & the entire thing didn’t seem to have a finish of any kind.

The bottom has a similar curved edge to the top. I’ve got a plan for something extra special on that bottom panel!

Don’t worry all you wood lovers out there, I’m not going to paint all the wood! I’m just going to give it a “Teadoddles” touch! ; )

Paint, Wax, & Shine

The first thing I did was sand the outside & top edges of the bin. I’m only using paint on the inside & edges. Using the larger paint brush, I did a kind of heavy dry brush with the Vintage chalk paint. You can still see some of the wood & knots, which I love.

It even highlights the split I love so much…

Next I added some of the gold paint to the top edges. I’m a little obsessed with this paint right now, which may be obvious if you look at my past few DIY projects. : D

I decided to highlight the “imperfections” in the wood grain on the side with a little gold too.

I’m really loving this so far!

Wondering what I did with the other color of chalk paint? I used it on that bottom panel & added my signature with my new custom stamp!

I couldn’t resist adding a few more curls & dots as well. Little details like this just make me smile! : )

All Finished

After all the paint was dry, I went over everything with the creme wax. This really helped bring out the grain on the outside of the bin. I took it outside for pictures, so y’all could see it in a natural light.

There were dark lines on two sides of the bin, but I couldn’t get them to sand all the way out. Just a little more character!

I believe I’ll be going over it again with wax because you can see brush marks on the raw wood side. That usually buffs out on the chalk paint, but it didn’t on the raw wood. I think it just soaked it up too fast.

I haven’t decided what I’m going to do with this yet, there are so many possibilities! It could be an umbrella holder, magazine bin, yarn bin, fabric bin, etc. What would you do with it?

  1. Love the bin. I’d probably put fabric in it or maybe the dog and cat’s toys. I’m constantly picking them up. I like what you did to the bottom. I did surprise myself recently by letting hubby have a tall wooden vase to store his canes.
